About Me

flaxspinweav: I am a retired Administrative Assistant enjoying my hobbies full time. An import to Canada from Britain since 1965, I am the mother of three grown children and six grandchildren aged 7 to 15. I learned to sew, knit and crochet as a young child from a mother who was a court-dressmaker in London before marrying my RAF father. In 2000, I started a biblical garden at my church planted with plants mentioned in the bible, one of which was flax which was and still is used to make linen fabric. After 4 seasons of cleaning up the garden to the compost pile, I began to wonder how fibre was found in or extracted from this plant. Subsequently I researched processing flax and began to learn to spin and weave. I also joined the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), where I am known as The Honourable Lady Anne of Saffron Walden, and learned how many things were made and done in the middle ages. I now do demonstrations at local schools for the Grade 4 medieval studies (in Canada) as well as classes for SCA groups. My current handout can be found on a page in this website.
